Sokoban strategy for word-shaped puzzles
Swordkoban rewards the classic Sokoban skill of protecting future pushes, then adds exact letter matching, irregular board shapes, obstacles, and hero abilities. The strongest solutions are built backward from the target word and verified one support tile at a time.

Think in pushes and support squares
A walking route answers where the hero can go now. A pushing route answers whether the hero can reach the correct side of a crate after every future push. Hard Sokoban positions are decided by the second question. For each proposed crate movement, identify the destination square, the support square behind the crate, and the next support square required to continue or turn.
A visually open room can still be push-restricted. A crate near the middle may divide the hero’s reachable floor into separate regions, and a wall two tiles away can remove the angle needed for a turn. Before pushing, mentally remove the crate from its current tile, place it on the destination, and ask which sides remain reachable.
- Destination square: where the crate will land after the next push.

- Future support square: where the hero must stand to continue from the new position.
- Escape route: how the hero reaches another side without moving a finished crate away from its target.
Recognize static and dynamic deadlocks
The classic static deadlock is a crate in a non-target corner. No sequence of ordinary pushes can remove it because the hero can never stand beyond either wall. Wall strips create a related trap: once a crate touches a wall, it can move only along that wall until a pull or special skill changes the geometry. If no matching target lies on the reachable strip, the crate is effectively lost.
Dynamic deadlocks depend on other movable objects. Two crates can freeze each other in a narrow corridor, a correct crate can block the support square for another target, or the final open gateway can close before all required letters pass through. These positions may contain no obvious corner, so judge the group rather than each crate alone.
- Never push into a non-target corner without a verified hero ability that can recover the crate.
- Avoid creating solid 2×2 blocks of walls and crates unless every crate in the block is already correctly placed.
- Do not fill the mouth of a one-tile corridor until all required crates and the hero have crossed it.
- A crate on the correct target can still be premature if it blocks the only route to an unfinished letter.
Assign letters before moving them
Exact matching reduces some ambiguity and creates new ordering constraints. A crate must reach a target bearing the same letter, so a geometrically convenient target may be irrelevant. When a word repeats a letter, do not assume the closest pairing is best. Compare the approach direction required by each target and the side of each crate that is currently accessible.
Start with forced assignments: a target reachable by only one matching crate, a crate trapped in a wall lane containing a matching target, or a letter that must cross a gateway before another crate closes it. Once forced assignments are fixed, use the remaining flexibility to minimize interference rather than raw distance.
- List each letter target and the directions from which its final push is possible.
- Eliminate matching crates that cannot enter those approach lanes.
- Reserve the least flexible crate-target pairs first.
- For duplicate letters, choose the pairing that preserves more shared floor for the other crates.
Plan the last push first
Targets along an edge or inside an alcove often allow only one final push direction. Picture the crate one tile before the target and the hero one tile behind it. If either tile is inaccessible in the proposed order, the target cannot be completed that way. Continue working backward until the crate reaches a position that is easy to create from the start.
Backward planning also exposes target order. Suppose the hero must stand on target A to push a crate onto target B. Then B normally needs to be completed before A. This dependency can extend across several letters and is more reliable than choosing by proximity.
Order crates through narrow passages
A one-cell corridor removes overtaking and turning. The first crate pushed deep into it will usually be the last crate that could leave, so entry order should mirror the order of the destinations beyond the corridor. If several targets sit at the far end, send the crate for the deepest target first.
Irregular maps can contain articulation points: single tiles or narrow openings that connect larger regions. Treat each as a limited resource. Before placing a crate on or beside one, confirm that the hero and every unfinished crate are already on the side where they need to remain.
- Deepest destination first when crates share a one-way lane.
- Keep turning rooms empty until all crates that need to rotate have done so.
- Move the hero across a gateway before a push if the push will close the return route.
- Use obstacles as boundaries when helpful, but remember that Earthbreaker or Hex Exchange can change that topology.
Evaluate skills by how they change topology
Movement-saving skills are useful, but the greatest value often comes from changing reachability. Rune Blink can place Vesper on an otherwise inaccessible support square. Hex Exchange can open one region while blocking another with the relocated obstacle. Vine Pull can reverse a wall commitment. Earthbreaker can create a permanent doorway. These are structural changes and should be planned with the same care as a crate push.
Titan Push and Lance Drive change crate distance quickly, yet neither guarantees a recoverable landing. Bamboo Roll always continues to the farthest clear tile, so it cannot substitute for precise one-step positioning. Moon Dash needs two clear tiles and cannot cross a crate. Learn each restriction well enough that the skill becomes part of the route rather than an emergency guess.
- Use a skill to gain a required side of a crate, open a critical connection, or remove unavoidable walking.
- Check every changed object after Hex Exchange and every landing tile after a multi-tile push.
- Schedule cooldown skills early enough that ordinary setup moves can make them ready for a later dependency.
- Keep limited uses for forced structural problems; ordinary walking should solve ordinary distance.
Optimize after finding a safe solution
The first goal is a reproducible clear. Optimization begins once the crate order is known. Separate necessary pushes from hero walking. Push count is usually constrained by geometry, while walking can often be shortened by completing nearby support tasks in one circuit or replacing a long approach with the correct mobility skill.
Compare a replay against par in sections rather than as one total. Count moves until the first crate reaches its target, then until the next major gateway is resolved. The section with repeated crossings, reversed pushes, or unused cooldown capacity is the best place to improve.
- Remove pushes that are later undone; they usually signal an incorrect order.
- Combine hero routes so one trip reaches support squares for multiple crates.
- Use Moon Dash, Bamboo Roll, or Rune Blink only when the saved walking exceeds the setup they require.
- Avoid moving a completed crate unless doing so removes more moves elsewhere than it costs to restore.
- Use Undo to test a local variation, then Reset when comparing full routes from the same start.
When a level feels impossible
An apparently impossible level is often an order problem. Return to the earliest irreversible push, not the most recent move. Check whether a target was filled too early, whether the wrong copy of a repeated letter entered a corridor, or whether the hero crossed a gateway on the wrong side of a crate.
- Can the hero still reach at least one useful side of every unfinished crate?
- Does each unfinished target still have a legal final push direction?
- Has any crate entered a wall strip without its matching target?
- Did a crate or exchanged obstacle close the only connection between two regions?
- Would a different hero solve the structural restriction more directly?
Frequently asked questions
Should I always move the most constrained crate first?
Reserve its route first, but do not necessarily move it first. Another crate may need to pass through the same corridor before the constrained crate occupies its final position.
Is a crate safe once it reaches the correct target?
Only if it does not block a required hero route, support square, or crate corridor. Correct placement can still be too early.
What is the fastest way to spot a deadlock?
Scan non-target corners and wall strips first, then test whether the hero can still reach the pushing side of every unfinished crate. Those checks catch most irreversible mistakes.
Are fewer pushes always better?
Usually, but stars use total moves. A route with the same essential pushes and much less walking can be the better par attempt.
